I had just exited the Gerrard Square shopping center a little after 7pm and saw a large bright red light hovering over the buildings to my south west. It was a very cloudy evening and the light was under the clouds, but not reflecting light onto them or onto the buildings below. I watched the light for at least ten minutes, it never moved or flashed or did much of anything other than hover. It was larger and brighter than an average star. At around 7:15 a plane flew by just under the light, it appeared closer than the light but the lights on the plane were obviously flashing and smaller, it also did not reflect light on the clouds. As I continued moving West I noted that it seemed to be hovering directly South of Carlaw Ave and Gerrard St, I lost sight of it as I moved Westward. I told a friend at work about it and she said that she and her sister had witnessed the same thing at around the same time, a bright hovering red light. My coworker told me that her sister continued to watch it until it simply faded out. They both live near Markham Rd and Lawrence Ave say that they have seen this phenomenon on multiple occasions South West of them and have never been able to find an explanation for it. I went searching around Google maps to see if there were any towers or anything where I saw the light and I do see a few stacks on top of buildings near where the light may have been, but none of the stacks are even close to being tall enough to be visible from where I was standing.
