Astronomers at the University of Arizona are part of an international team of exoplanets hunters developing new technology that would dramatically improve the odds of discovering planets with conditions suitable for life -- such as having liquid water on the surface.
The team presented its results at a scientific conference sponsored by the International Astronomical Union in Victoria, British Columbia.
Terrestrial planets orbiting nearby stars often are concealed by vast clouds of dust enveloping the star and its system of planets. Our solar system, too, has a dust cloud, which consists mostly of debris left behind by clashing asteroids and exhaust spewing out of comets when they pass by the sun.
"Current technology allows us to detect only the brightest clouds, those that are a few thousand times brighter than the one in our solar system," said Denis Defr`ere, a postdoctoral fellow in the UA's department of astronomy and instrument scientist of the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer, or LBTI.
He explained that while the brighter clouds are easier to see, their intense glare makes detecting putative Earth-like planets difficult, if not impossible. "We want to be able to detect fainter dust clouds, which would dramatically increase our chances of finding more of these planets."
"If you see a dust cloud around a star, that's an indication of rocky debris, and it increases the likelihood of there being something Earth-like around that star," said Phil Hinz, an associate professor of astronomy at the UA's Steward Observatory.
"From previous observations, we know that these planets are fairly common," he added. "We can expect that if a space telescope dedicated to that mission were to look around a certain area of sky, we'd expect to find quite a few."
Hinz and Defr`ere are working on an instrument that will allow astronomers to detect fainter clouds that are only about 10 times -- instead of several thousand times -- brighter than the one in our solar system.
"It's like being here in Victoria and trying to image a firefly circling a lighthouse in San Francisco that is shrouded in fog," Defr`ere said about the technological challenge.
"That level of sensitivity is the minimum we need for future space telescope missions that are to characterize Earth-like planets that can sustain liquid water on the surface," he explained. "Our goal is to eliminate the dust clouds that are too bright from the catalog of candidates because they are not promising targets to detect planets suitable for life."
"With a bright dust cloud, which is 1,000 times brighter than the one in our solar system, its light becomes comparable to that of its star, which makes it easier to detect," explained Hinz.
Fainter clouds, on the other hand, can be about 10,000 times less bright than their star, so it becomes difficult or impossible for observers to make out their faint glow in the star's overpowering glare.
Funded by NASA, the team is in the middle of carrying out tests to demonstrate the feasibility of these observations using both apertures of the Large Binocular Telescope, or LBT, in Arizona. The project aims at determining how difficult it would be to achieve the desired results before committing to a billion-dollar space telescope mission.
According to Hinz, NASA's goal is to be able take a direct picture of Earth-like, rocky planets and record their spectrum of light to analyze their composition and characteristics such as temperature, presence of water and other parameters.
"To do that, one would need a space telescope specifically designed for this type of imaging," he said. "Our goal is to do a feasibility study of whether it would be possible to distinguish the light emission of the planet from the background emission of the dust cloud through direct observation."
The researchers take advantage of a technique known as nulling interferometry and the unique configuration of the LBT, which resembles a giant pair of binoculars.
"We combine the light from two apertures, cancel out the light from the central star, and with that it becomes easier to see the light from the dust cloud," Hinz explained. "To achieve this, we have to cause the two light paths to interfere with each other, which requires lining them up with very high precision. The work presented at the conference used the same technique with the two large telescopes of the Keck Observatory in Hawaii in order to detect the dust cloud around the star Fomalhaut located 25 light years from our sun.
"Based on our observations at the European Very Large Telescope Interferometer, we knew that Fomalhaut was surrounded by a bright dust cloud located very close to the star," said J'er'emy Lebreton, principal investigator of the study, who is at the Institut de Plan'etologie et d'Astrophysique in Grenoble, France.
"Using the Keck Interferometer, we found out that Fomalhaut has a less bright, more diffuse cloud orbiting close to the habitable zone that resembles the Main Asteroid Belt in our solar system. This belt is likely in dynamical interaction with yet undetected planets."
The study presented here is one in a series of three publications and was conducted in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam; the University of Li`ege in Belgium; NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech, Pasadena, Calif.; the University of Paris; and the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.

Area 51 has long been fodder for science fiction films and wild UFO tales claiming the US government imposed secrecy over the site northwest of Las Vegas to cover up evidence of extra-terrestrials touching down on Earth.
Instead of encounters with flying saucers, the documents released by the Central Intelligence Agency on Thursday recount a less sensational history of Area 51 -- as a testing range for the government's U-2 spy plane during the Cold War.
The CIA in-house history makes no mention of the legendary "Roswell incident," when a weather balloon crashed in New Mexico in 1947. UFO true believers allege it was an alien spacecraft that went down, and that Area 51's hangars had hidden evidence of extra-terrestrial corpses.
But according to the CIA, the government secrecy surrounding Area 51 was not about Martians but about hiding a new spy plane from the Soviets.
The U-2 reconnaissance aircraft was designed to snoop on the Soviet Union at high-altitude, and its development was top-secret.
In April 1955, the CIA chose a remote dry lakebed in the Nevada desert as a testing ground, which was designated on maps as Area 51.
Test flights for the U-2 aircraft were conducted at a much higher altitude than commercial airliners or other military planes.
In the 1950s, commercial planes flew at between 10,000 and 20,000 feet and warplanes such as B-47 reached altitudes of less than 40,000 feet.
The U-2 planes flew at above 60,000 feet, and reports of unidentified flying objects in the Nevada desert started to roll in, the report said.
"High altitude testing of the U-2 soon led to an unexpected side effect -- a tremendous increase in reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs)," it said.
The reports of UFOs often came from pilots from commercial airliners in the early evening hours, with the U-2 plane's silver wings reflecting the rays of the sun.
The surveillance planes appeared to be "fiery objects" high in the sky, it said.
"At this time, no one believed manned flight was possible above 60,000 feet, so no one expected to see an object so high in the sky," it said.
The commercial pilots and other observers on the ground wrote letters to an Air Force unit in Dayton, Ohio charged with investigating such sightings.
Anxious to avoid exposing the ultra-secret U-2 program, Air Force officers explained the sightings as merely due to natural phenomena, though they knew the high-flying U-2 was the true cause.
U-2 and other surveillance flights "accounted for more than one-half of all UFO reports during the late 1950s and most of the 1960s," it said.
The 400-page report, titled "Central Intelligence Agency and Overhead reconnaissance: The U-2 and Oxcart Programs, 1954-1974," was released as a result of a Freedom of Information request dating to 2005 from the National Security Archives at George Washington University.
The study was published in classified form for spy agencies in 1992 and a heavily censored version was published in 1998.
Area 51's location has been an open secret for years but government documents released previously had not acknowledged its existence and role in such a detailed way. Officials also had referred to a location "near Groom Lake."

I was under the impression that the FB team was going to study and analyze the famous Patterson film,but instead we got an lazy attempt at a recreation and a lazy analysis, but at least they did point out the fact you can see muscle mass and movement in the creature and it was good to here Gimlin tell the story.
My next problem with the show was with the Marble mountain footage. Yes it was great to get someone who was there during the filming and to here them speak about what really happen, but in yet another lazy attempt at investigating and research the FB crew elected NOT to go to the actual mountain where the creature was filmed to do their recreation. This is totally unacceptable, they could have sent Cliff, he is by far in the best shape of the whole lot of them. If they had went to where the creature actually came down the mountain then we would know a lot more about it, like how tall it really was. With the way the FB team handled the Marble mountain footage one has to assume that it was only a person walking down the mountain side as we have no idea how big the creature was or how rough the terrain really is,thanks to a lazy crew.
Next the FB team spent a few days and nights looking for bigfoot, it was a pretty good hunt and they had some things happen. The problem is that a couple of times they heard what they said was a whistle, well that is great, but why not replay the whistle and give the people watching the show a chance to hear it? They said they heard some yells but again no replay of the yell...but in the end it was a pretty good show.
Matt Moneymaker came off as a lot less of a Jerk last night and that is a big improvement to say the least. He kind of hates me but that's ok, I can still respect him,the show and his efforts.
Ranae Holland - did her first bigfoot scream last night and it was a good highlight of the show,Nice Job Ranae!
Cliff Barackman - spent time alone,sleeping on a mat, in the mountains and searching for bigfoot. It was very dangerous.
as for Bobo he came off as lovable as ever and he always get to play bigfoot during the recreations.
So if i was using a rating scale of 1-10 I would rate the show at about a 7. I still have high hopes for the upcoming season and can't wait to watch. Good Luck FB team.
