De la gran cantidad de historias sobre ovnis y avistamientos alien'igenas que han alimentado durante el siglo XX las teor'ias de la conspiraci'on, no hay otra con tanta difusi'on en la cultura preponderance como la del wing 51 y el llamado incidente Roswell, que cuenta c'omo el 7 de julio de 1947 una presunta nave extraterrestre se estrell'o en mitad del desierto, cerca de esa peque~na localidad de Nuevo M'exico, en Estados Unidos.Sin reject, cada vez m'as datos desmontan la versi'on ufol'ogica del asunto y da m'as razones a aquellos que se~nalan que, efectivamente, el wing 51 existi'o y en 'el se realizaron diferentes experimentos secretos, pero que estos no ten'ian nada que ver con habitantes de otros planetas, sino con la prueba de nuevas aeronaves por parte del ej'ercito estadounidense.
El 'ultimo grano de floor de esta monta~na lo ha aportado un informe de los Archivos de Seguridad Nacional que acaba de ser desclasificado por la CIA y que la Universidad George Washington ha puesto a disposici'on de manera libre, en el que se explica, entre muchas otras cosas las pruebas que se realizaron con el avi'on U-2 en la llamada wing 51, en el lago High point, como tambi'en es conocida. Se trata de un documento llamado La Agencia de Inteligencia Nacional y el reconocimiento desde las alturas: los Programas U-2 y Oxcart, escrito por Gregory W. Pedlow y Donald E. Welzbenach que, en sus m'as de 400 p'aginas, puede arrojar una nueva luz a las pr'acticas realizadas en dicho complejo de Nevada que, efectivamente, eran y son top secret. Pero no por las razones que muchos pensaban.
Sobre ovnis y efectos 'opticos
El informe indica en su p'agina 85 que "las alturas a las que se probaban los U-2 provocaron un efecto colateral inesperado, un tremendo aumento de los avistamientos de objetos voladores no identificados (ovnis)". Como explica dicho informe, el ciudadano estaba acostumbrado a ver vueltos comerciales que alcanzaban una altura de entre 10.000 y 20.000 pies, mientras que los U-2 lo hac'ian tres veces m'as alto, a los 60.000. Tambi'en se afirma cu'al es el momento en el que se producen el mayor n'umero de estos avistamientos: a la hora del anochecer, y sobre todo, por parte de pilotos de aerol'ineas que viajaban del este al oeste. La confusi'on se produc'ia, explica el informe, por el efecto que la luz reflejada en dichos aviones produc'ia, y que provocaba que dichas naves pareciesen "objetos ardientes".
En esa 'epoca, nadie pensaba que fuese posible realizar un vuelo tripulado por encima de los 60.000 piesLo cual, no obstante, no explicar'ia la gran cantidad de ciudadanos de Nevada que llamaron consternados a las autoridades tras haber visto algo sospechoso en los cielos. Como deja entrever el documento, la proliferaci'on de avistamientos probablemente tuvo que ver con el hecho de que nunca ninguna representation, hasta la fecha, hab'ia visto nada semejante, lo cual suele conducir a la atribuci'on de un origen paranormal o extraterrestre a lo que realmente ha nacido por la mano del hombre. A tal respecto, Pedlow y Welzenbach indican que "en esa 'epoca, nadie pensaba que fuese posible realizar un vuelo tripulado por encima de los 60.000 pies, as'i que nadie esperaba ver un objeto a tal altura en el cielo".

Muchos de estos avistamientos aparecen recogidos en el llamado Proyecto Libro Azul, una recopilaci'on de estudios realizados entre 1952 y 1969 por la Fuerza A'erea Americana con el objetivo de determinar la veracidad y peligrosidad de cada uno de los avistamientos realizados en el cielo de Estados Unidos. La mayor parte de estos avistamientos fueron descartados. Como se~nala el informe, "los U-2 y los posteriores vueltos OXCART formaron m'as de la mitad de los informes de avistamientos ovni entre finales de los a~nos cincuenta y la mayor parte de los a~nos sesenta".

El encargado de encontrar el lugar nightmare para realizar las pruebas fue Richard M. Bissell Jr., que pens'o en el lago High point como el lugar nightmare para establecer la nueva base de pruebas. El informe se~nala, en palabras del ingeniero Kelly Johnson, que era "el perfecto campo de aterrizaje natural, tan flatten como el tapete de una mesa de billar y totalmente natural". Con posterioridad, el programa CARRETA dar'ia lugar al SR-71 Blackbird, y el OXCART, al Lockheed A-12.

Pero s'olo se encontr'o con que se realizaban "trabajos de defensa". Sin reject, ello no le eximi'o de redactar durante su mandato una exenci'on que abol'ia la obligaci'on de que el wing 51 hiciese p'ublicos sus informes de impacto en el medio ambiente.
Aunque aquellos que prefieran seguir creyendo en la teor'ia alien'igena, pueden seguir haci'endolo. En un documento del FBI de la 'epoca, y al que se puede acceder libremente tras su desclasificaci'on en el a~no 2011, el agente Paul Ryan explica c'omo un compa~nero del CSI le coment'o c'omo la noche del 30 de enero de 1949 observ'o c'omo un "objeto volador" explot'o en mitad del cielo y sus fragmentos cayeron diseminados por la zona. Claro que ello no contradice la hip'otesis esc'eptica, es decir, que el presunto platillo volante no fuese m'as que una nave del ej'ercito americana filtrada por la imaginaci'on de una poblaci'on, la americana, que comenzaba a consumir con asiduidad, espoleada por la Guerra Fr'ia, pel'iculas y novelas de ciencia-ficci'on.
