When we first posted information about the unidentified flying object seen over Amherst four days ago now (SEE JANUARY 8 POSTING HERE), a Facebook friend promptly responded, "Is this weather?" Her meaning was clear - why are we, a weather-focused blog, delving into a subject area that, at best, wanders pretty far from storm fronts and cloud formations, and, at worst, smacks of fuzzy science, wishful thinking, and little green men? My immediate response was to point out that the object was in the sky and thus fair game for observation and commentary by any entity named "Head in the Clouds." Beyond focusing exclusively on the upcoming forecast, this particular weather blog strives to capture what the weather means and how it informs day-to-day living in our area and beyond. We chat about seasonal events and outdoor life, stargazing, poetry and writing about weather, cooking weather, photography, weather humor, etc. Some mysterious object flying around the sky certainly seems to fit the criteria.
What soon unfolded was an example of the power of social media to bring people together and to shine some light on what is generally hidden. Between this blog and accounts provided by followers of "DAVE HAYES THE WEATHER NUT" (visit him on Facebook), by mid-Wednesday it soon became clear that in the early evening on January 8 some kind of aircraft, described as triangular or diamond shaped with lights on it, had traveled silently, at a low altitude (75' off the ground was one report) from the center of Amherst to the outer edges of East Amherst.
Despite all the talk and all the press coverage, no answers have surfaced. So folks in Amherst are left wondering... what did we actually see? Clearly, this was no cross-town coordinated punking or mass hysteria. Numerous people at different points along the flight trajectory provided independent and strikingly similar accounts of what they witnessed. (And the reports continue to come in - just take a look at the comments to our previous postings on this topic, dated January 8-10.)
Although extraterrestrial visitation can be a thrilling, sci-fi-story-come-to-life prospect to consider, most of the folks I've spoken with are fairly certain that something far more plausible is at the root of this sighting. And the theory that seems to fit the best? That we likely witnessed some kind of locally launched unmanned aerial vehicle (more commonly referred to as a drone). There is no proof yet, and even if it was a drone, there's still the question of whether the flight path was by design or accident, what it was doing here (possibly a test gone astray?), or who launched it. But it's a working theory at the moment, and worth further investigation.

"A couple of days before reading the article in the Gazette about UFO sightings in Amherst I was looking out a window at my house and saw a large, gray, plane-like thing moving quickly and quietly just at the tree line. My house is in the hills, east of North Amherst so the object would have been flying north, parallel to the hills. It was daytime and I could see it clearly, although briefly. I was startled not just because it was flying so low but because it was unlike any plane I've ever seen. "
"When reading some of the comments here I noticed someone mentioned drones so I looked online at photos of various types of drones. One of the photos closely resembled the object I saw the other day. There were also photos online of other types of drones including models that are triangular in shape. I do hope I am wrong because the thought of drones flying around is pretty scary, but I cannot think of another explanation."
This whole thing has raised more questions than answers. But these are questions that deserve answers. While it may be fun to wink and eye-roll about "those crazies in Amherst," or imagine a "close encounter" of any kind, ultimately that reaction only redirects our attention away from what is really happening above us. And sometimes, apparently, it's not just a change in the weather."

SHORT UFO FACT: [ 30 Dec 1977, Keith, the driver of a car saw a "SHOOTING STAR" to the east, then a white circular light pacing the vehicle at 100 km/h. He decided to stop for a look so put the car out of gear and slowly applied the brake. When the car reached a speed of eight to fifteen km/h the driver experienced difficulty which he described as mistiming, choke out, spark plug misfiring, although the ignition and oil lights did not come on. There was no effect on the radio. The light disappeared behind trees and there was no more trouble with the car.]

Last night, at 21:30 p.m. PST, I was facing east when I saw what looked like a bright meteor/comet with a very long tail traveling I believe NW-SE.
Any idea what it was? Not finding any reports of meteor showers last night over Los Angeles. Thanks!

Thanks to the quick thinking of a truck driver passing through Pennsylvania we have a good shot of this UFO.This week in Somerset County, Pa. The identity of the man hasn't been released while the case is under investigation by the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). He saw the object on Monday and in his short written report to MUFON the next day, he wrote:DRIVING TRACTOR AND TRAILER SOUTH IN PA. LOOKED UP AND SAW OBJECT HOVERING OVER MOUNTAIN TOP. ABOUT THAT TIME, OTHER TRUCKERS WERE HEARD ON CB CHATTING ABOUT SEEING THE SAME THING. THE OBJECT WAS QUITE A DISTANCE AWAY BUT WAS STILL VERY VISIBLE. SO ACTUAL SIZE WAS VERY BIG. NOT SURE EXACT LOCATION, HOWEVER IT WAS CLOSE TO THE ALLEGHENY TUNNEL.THE IMAGE BELOW SHOWS A LONG SHOT TAKEN FROM INSIDE THE WITNESS' TRUCK:"IT WAS A CIGAR-SHAPED OBJECT. A December 1967 alleged UFO sighting and "abduction" by police officer Herbert Schirmer in Ashland, Nebraska vetted by the Condon Committee and UFO researchers examples a kind of madness often found in UFO accounts.
The madness is not a violent kind of madness but a subliminal madness that is pre-psychotic and exacerbated by UFO researchers employing hypnosis, an arcane art that has been discontinued by the psychiatric community and science.
Officer Schirmer reported seeing a strange object while on night patrol but later thought he had experienced missing time.

What intrigues me is how this imagined sighting and abduction was encouraged by hypnosis and the intervention of UFO "researchers" into the mental aberration that afflicted Officer Schirmer, whose life fell apart, accordingly and totally, after the imagined event.
He did not receive sensible or proper psychological help, rather exploited by UFO aficionados and flawed UFO researchers.
Others have been also exploited in similar ways, some capitalizing along with their exploiters (Betty Hill and Travis Walton) and others just exploited (Mannor, Michalak, Taylor, et al.).
This is what Ufology is all about, pretty much: exploitation.

OBSERVED: I was out trail riding in a remote part of the Ocala National Forest when I became stuck in a mud hole. I was out there for several hours waiting for someone to come pull me out. What got my attention first was the sound of someone hitting something against a tree which striked me as odd considering where I was at and I didn't hear any other vehicles prior to the knock so I proceeded to approach the sounds after walking about 300 yards away from my vehicle I saw what I thought was a huge man in a ghillie suit striking a pine tree with a large stick as I got closer I realized it was not a man but a huge creature that I will never forget as long as I live. It had a huge chest probably 60in. across and though it was in a slumped standing position it had to be 8 feet tall with long muscular arms and long chest and mid section like its legs were shorter than chest area. As I was trying slowly to back away to get back to my truck I stepped on a stick and it immediately turned to look at me using its whole body to do so and then it ran off caring stick in a graceful stride through the woods.

FEBRUARY 04, 2013 - UNITED STATES - UFO sightings 2013 records keep expanding on the MUFON web site, as reports of strange objects in the sky continue to be sent in from various U.S. states. Just over the weekend alone, MUFON received 40 sighting reports, with several submissions from Florida and Texas. But one of the most unusual reports came from California. The CA UFO sighting was titled, "Black solid egg shape with orange lights on the bottom." The reporter's name is not displayed, but the artist rendering that accompanied the report is stamped with "Jeremy Nolen Graphic Design."

"First saw [the unidentified flying object] coming from the west, it looked like a fiery object floating in the sky. Then as it moved east it stopped and hovered for a few seconds, then it started coming towards me for about 10 seconds, then it stopped and hovered as if it knew I was looking at it," reads the brief UFO sighting report. "Then it started to slowly move to the east again. I ran inside and grabbed my mom and my uncle. We all watched it float away before it just vanished somewhere over USD college.
I got a really good look at it thru my binoculars for about 1 minute. No sound. Hovered, then moved, changing directions." It is understood from the description on the image that the "mom and uncle" saw the same strange craft. "Looked like molten fire was dripping off of it as it flew slowly by. I didnt want to run and grab my camera in fear that it would go away." The MUFON report ended here. In lieu of a photo, the witness sent a graphic image to show what he saw through his binoculars. The CA UFO report was submitted on Feb. 1, but the sighting happened on Nov. 17. It is not, however, unusual that a report was submitted months away from date of sighting. MASSACHUSETTS, USA, 14 AUGUST 2013 - Recent video of a late posted UFO sighting shows the UFO activity over Wareham, Massachusetts in which several UFO lights moving in a paculiar fashion was recorded on August 14, 2013.
WITNESS COMMENT: "I was on the beach about 9:30 at night when myself and a friend noticed 2 sets of red lights over the beach approx 300-400 ft away and 50+/-ft above the water. They appeared to be leaving a marsh area behind the beach. They appeared red with a orange/white center that sort of glowed in fiery kind of way when they were close, and appeared completely red as they got further away. My initial thought was they looked like mini suns. They were steady in intensity and did not flicker or change color. The video shows them as being white at times but to the naked eye they were always red. aprox 2 minutes later a second set of lights appeared from the same location and followed the same trajectory out over the water. Neither sets of lights made any sound, moved slowly and smoothly over the water. I dont know how big they really were but at my distance of 300-400 feet away they initially appeared to be about the size of a softball. There were six other witness to the sighting including a couple on the porch of the beach house behind us and 4 teenagers a little ways down the beach. The video was taken with my Samsung Galaxy III"

Hello. First, let me tell you that I am deeply grateful for all of MUFON's very important work. In addition to the cases presented in your reports, I have studied several hundred similar cases and I am therefore more than a little familiar with the UFO phenomenon. However, only beginning this week can I say that I know with 100% certainty that highly advanced beings, piloting incredible and terrifying aircraft, are conducting some kind of research in Vermont. Based on everything I have learned, I am also convinced that these beings number in the thousands or tens of thousands globally and that their research is being conducted all over the world on a massive scale. Now about myself. I am in my mid-thirties and live with my wife in Franklin County, Vermont on a hill overlooking a small valley of trees and cow pastures, which rests between the towns of Milton, Saint Albans and Cambridge. I am a well educated, rational biomedical laboratory technician. My mother, who lives in a neighboring county, is a PhD research scientist who I would consider to be extremely rational and never prone to hysteria or exaggeration. My wife is also well educated, and very practical - even stubbornly skeptical - about strange phenomenon and other events which have no bearing on her life. Two years ago, my mother was walking with a friend, who is a radar operator for the Air National Guard. The path they were walking is very near the downtown area in our largest city, about 25 miles south from my house. She tells me the sky that evening was dark, except for the many stars which were at that moment unobscured by clouds. She felt something odd and was compelled to look directly overhead. She and her friend then saw a very large, black, triangular craft with faint orangish lights, one at each corner of the craft. She said that the craft was so dark and so quiet as to seem as if it was absorbing light and sound. They watched as the craft moved slowly from north to south and finally disappeared from view after a few minutes. Apparently, my mother's friend was at least somewhat familiar with similar objects, but provided no information. My mother told me about this experience immediately after it happened because our close relationship and mutual respect permit this. This week, I had my own amazing experience, and my wife shared it with me. On the evening December 4th, 2014 at approximately 9 p.m., I was exercising in our basement and noticed a very bright light which I could see through our basement window. I ran up our first flight of stairs, opened the front door and stood on the porch. Before noticing any detail I felt an intense sense of dread. I looked up toward the sky at a 45 degree angle, directly away from our house, toward Vermont's highest mountain peak. In the near distance, perhaps a half mile from where I was standing, I saw an extremely bright object, pulsating red and blue lights, bouncing around slightly. I stood for perhaps 30 seconds or a minute watching this object, feeling transfixed but also very fearful. I recalled in that moment some of the stories of abductees who were paralyzed prior to their close encounters, and screamed at myself mentally to turn around and go back inside. I walked quickly inside, locked the door and ran up the next flight of stairs to our living room, where my wife was sitting and watching television. I turned off all the lights and then the TV and told her, "you need to see this." I brought her to our picture window, oriented precisely eastward in the direction of the object, and asked, "WHAT IS THAT?" She leaned toward the window, squinted her eyes and her mouth dropped open. At the same moment I noticed another similar bright object to the north, but this object became a secondary consideration to us because it was partially obscured by tree branches near our window and appeared to be farther away and at a higher altitude. I asked her to stand there and continue to watch the object for unusual flight patterns if it began to change position. As she did this, I ran to my office to retrieve my Celestron Model #21035 travel telescope. When I returned, I noticed a light on the ground directly below the UFO, in a location that I know to be a patch of cow pasture void of any structures. I quickly found the UFO in my telescope lens. What I saw shocked me down to my core. The object was disc-shaped, bright, colorful, pulsating and bouncing. The pulsating red and blue lights appeared to come from within the craft, passing out through its walls. I then found the light on the ground below the craft and saw that it was cylindrical, orangish-yellow and was illuminating a white angular object which sat closer to my house on the grass. After two or three minutes, I decided that I would not see enough detail in the light and turned the telescope back toward the UFO. When my wife again examined the craft, she asked, "what is that other thing...in the air, closer to us, in the bottom right corner of the view?" I looked and saw the corner of another, mostly black and camouflaged object, perhaps two or three hundred yards closer to us. I watched this object for ten minutes or longer and noticed that it was slowly rocking around and up and down. On several occasions, I could clearly see that the bright, pulsating disc was casting enough light on the angular craft to illuminate two corners of what appeared to be a triangular black craft. My wife paced around the house, communicating irritation with me for looking at these objects with such interest at first, but eventually, after at least a full hour, parked herself on a chair near me saying, "I feel weird...I'm scared...I don't like this." At some point, I noticed that the light on the ground had vanished. Then, I noticed that the pulsating disc was calmer - more stationary and less bright. The red light, especially, was mostly or entirely gone and the craft appeared to settle into a lower-energy state. The triangular craft remained in the same position for another thirty minutes. Immediately prior to going to bed, I saw that the disc and triangle had both changed positions. The disc was now higher, perhaps directly above the triangle, which was now oriented with a single corner pointing downward. Suddenly, I saw the full form of the triangle, which was hovering with its underside pointing directly at my window. I saw one faint, circular orange light at each of three corners. The next day, I bumped into a resident who lives on the road directly opposite my house from the previous evening's activity. This individual informed me that she had see an object that matched my description of the bright object at 9 p.m. on December 3rd and 4th. I knew this meant that the object might return soon, and watched from my window throughout the night of December 5th. Two bright, pulsating objects appeared shortly before midnight, at least one half mile farther from my house than they had been the previous night. I watched for over an hour as they appeared to follow a grid pattern slightly above the tree tops near a river. A quick scan of the internet reveals that Vermont is currently a hotspot for these phenomena. Many people have reported similar objects in my area; MANY more have likely seen them and remained silent. I have attached a sketch of the two objects from the night of December 4th. Ok this is it.. probably the final posts i will do on the web bots for now!. Basically i wanted to talk about what Cliff High said on Radio Show Journeys with Rebecca yesterday. Driving home from a BBQ in Portland, OR just after Midnight Saturday June 15, 2013. My son was sitting in the front passenger seat and witnessed with me. He asked me what it was. I slowed the car down as I was taking the exit to I-5 North the other cars slowed down, it was late so not many cars out. I first thought a helicopter but it was much larger and did not have propeller or wings. It had Circular green lights and violet flashing lights. It was very close to us about 100 feet away(?!?) I am drawing a picture of what I saw. I then thought possible military vehicle? It was flying in a figure 8 pattern then hovered over the water. Then I kept driving wishing I would have stopped longer...ugh. What is this? Ethereal experience.

Friend Malcolm Chisholm, who has a wonderful approach to information (= he reads widely) writes to tell me of a book written by Alfred Russel Wallace (Darwin's co-theorist) on the question of the habitability of Mars:
It was written in 1907 when Wallace was living in Broadstone, Dorset (where I went to school).
Wallace takes on Percival Lowell, a supreme icon of American astronomy. Lowell thought there were Martians and they used canals etc. Wallace blows up this theory, ending the book with the statement:
"Mars, therefore, is not only uninhabited by intelligent beings such as Mr. Lowell postulates, but is absolutely UNINHABITABLE."
Remember that Wallace has been derided for his beliefs in ID and spiritualism. Yet he was obviously not afraid to go against the scientific speculative spirit of the age. Indeed. In the introduction to the 1907 edition, "the whole of which is scanned online", editor Charles H. Smith notes,
For many years one of Wallace's least remembered books, Is Mars Habitable? is increasingly being recognized as one of the first examples of the proper application of the scientific method to the study of extraterrestrial atmospheres and geography-that is, as one of the pioneer works in the field of exobiology. Here is Wallace's conclusion:
To put the whole case in the fewest possible words:
(1) All physicists are agreed that, owing to the distance of Mars from the sun, it would have a mean temperature of about -35 F. (= 456 F. abs.) even if it had an atmosphere as dense as ours.
(2) But the very low temperatures on the earth under the equator, at a height where the barometer stands at about three times as high as on Mars, proves, that from scantiness of atmosphere alone Mars cannot possibly have a temperature as high [[p. 110]] as the freezing point of water; and this proof is supported by Langley's determination of the low maximum temperature of the full moon.
The combination of these two results must bring down the temperature of Mars to a degree wholly incompatible with the existence of animal life.
(3) The quite independent proof that water-vapour cannot exist on Mars, and that therefore, the first essential of organic life--water--is non-existent.
The conclusion from these three independent proofs, which enforce each other in the multiple ratio of their respective weights, is therefore irresistible--that animal life, especially in its higher forms, cannot exist on the planet.
Mars, therefore, is not only uninhabited by intelligent beings such as Mr. Lowell postulates, but is absolutely UNINHABITABLE. What made Wallace so unpopular compared to Darwin is that he insisted that in science, evidence matters. Carl Sagan-style proclamations like "They're out there! How could we be so arrogant as to think we are all alone!" do not become science just because they are proclaimed by scientists.
