PHOENIX -- UFOs that were visible from Queen Creek to Paradise Valley were identified late Thursday as more than a dozen electronic devices launched by the Space Data Corporation of Chandler.

Some people in Queen Creek, Mesa and Paradise Valley glanced out their windows Thursday morning and spotted a string of UFOs.

Starting around 6 a.m. CBS 5 News viewers reported seeing between five and 11 slow-moving, white lights in the sky.

The objects, which appeared to be balloons of some sort, were visible in the southern sky, due north. They could be seen for several hours.

"I thought it was stars at first, and they then started moving around," said Eleanor Maloney, who saw the lights. "Then I was not sure what I was looking at, at that point."

Phoenix Sky Harbor airport also reported receiving calls about the objects, though it was also unable to identify them.

The National Weather Service said it has no balloons nearby, and Vandenberg Air Force Base in California said it did not track any man-made objects in the area Thursday morning.

At the time of the report, NASA did not know what the objects were, either.

Around 7 a.m., a small device in a styrofoam box and a parachute landed near Phoenix-Mesa-Gateway Airport in Mesa.

The device was one of about 20 launched early Thursday morning.

CBS 5 News was told these devices are like small cell phone towers in the sky that help expand cell service in remote areas.

The Space Data Corporation said it has launched about 20,000 of these devices in the past five years.
