BEIJING, Jan. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Despite increased calls to step up efforts in finding extraterrestrial life by sending signals into space, some scientists believe such a strategy may prove dangerous.
In Britain Dr Marek Kukula, public astronomer at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, said, "Part of me is with the enthusiasts and I would like us to try to make proactive contact with a wiser, more peaceful civilisation."
But he is concerned at the risks.
"We might like to assume that if there is intelligent life out there it is wise and benevolent," he said, "But of course we have no evidence for this. Given that the consequences of contact may not be what we initially hoped for, then we need governments and the UN to get involved in any discussions."
The issue will be among several topics raised at a two-day meeting at the Royal Society in London this week, under the heading, "The detection of extraterrestrial life and the consequences for science and society".
Among those speaking will be Professor Simon Conway Morris, a Cambridge University evolutionary biologist, who says there is good reason to think aliens exist, and that they may even have chemical and biological similarities to us.
"My basic argument is that, contrary to most neo-Darwinian thinking at the moment, evolution is much more predictable than people think," Morris said. "In particular, I would argue that the emergence, by evolution, of intelligence, cognitive capacity and all that stuff is an inevitability."
Many scientists are enthusiastic about searching for aliens.
"My personal view is that being more active is a worthy strategy," said Douglas Vakoch, director of interstellar message composition at the SETI [search for extraterrestrial intelligence] Institute in California. "There is more serious talk of it, though not at the institute level."
At an astrobiology conference in Texas in April, SETI enthusiasts will discuss new methods of discovering extraterrestrial life, including the sending of interstellar messages. Alexander Zaitsev, a Russian scientist who has already beamed out four carefully composed signals to nearby stars, has been invited to attend.
While some warn of dangers in attracting hostile extraterrestrials, the chances of finding any life outside Earth seems more remote than ever.
"My main worry is that our technology is simply not up to the task. Earth came into existence four to five billion years ago, but the oldest stars are twice that age. They may have life, but that life may be far more advanced than we are," said astronomer Heather Couper.
Conway Morris suggests that there may simply be no alien civilizations out there, perhaps because planets with biospheres are very rare.
Weak electromagnetic signals have been transmitted from Earth for nearly 100 years in the form of radio, television and other transmissions. Some should have traveled 100 light years out into space. But as digital technology develops, Earth is becoming quieter.
U.S. astronomer Frank Drake, who has been seeking radio signals from alien civilizations for almost 50 years, said it is becoming less likely aliens will pick up Earthly transmissions. "The trouble is that we are making ourselves more and more difficult to be heard," said Dr Drake.
"We are broadcasting in much more efficient ways today and are making our signals fainter and fainter."
In the past radio and television transmissions were broadcast at thousands of watts. Satellites typically beam signals of less than 75 watts, and with localized digital broadcasting this may be even less.
"For good measure, in America we have switched from analogue to digital broadcasting and you are going to do the same in Britain very soon," Drake said, "When you do that, your transmissions will become four times fainter because digital uses less power. Very soon we will become undetectable."
This may be welcome news for those scientists fearful malevolent aliens might be attracted to the Earth if they learn of our presence.

ironically enough I was talking about ufos with a guy that works on the renovation of our house after dinner. No misunderstanding, I am a practical man not a deluded UFO type. 11 pm, clear sky, a few stars, bright moon 3/4. I saw a light approaching. First thought it was airplane with landing lights even though our location is still far from any airport. The light came drifting in our direction. It was way too bright for any craft. Can't tell height. Absolutely no blinking signal lights. Just a very bright white orb. When it was closest to us we noticed two sets of small "light rays" like emmited on the edges of the light ball. one green, one red (see illustration). the ligth went over a low light cloud and was still very visible through it. I said "this light is very bright". My friend said "indeed". It past over us describing an arch changing smoothly its course. We changed our location to follow the object by sight. it went in the path of the very bright moon and was still clearly visible and very bright. Speed was average. Like floating. Clearly not any type of chinese lantern though. Too big and high. We watched it go away southward. Then in 3 seconds it "turned off" and vanished.

UFO SIGHTING IN MIAMI, FLORIDA ON AUGUST 12TH 2013 - ELEVEN OBJECTS IN FORMATION, RECORDED WITH TWO CAMERAS.
This was a chance sighting, I have a security camera scanning the sky and then I spotted all these objects in formation, I went outside and then I can see them with the naked eye, in formation brights, but not point like, with a bluish color bright, this was at 4:15pm today, not two hours ago, and the sun was glaring, difficult to distinguish lots of details when the sun is almost in front of your face, objects pass overhead coming from the northeast and moved in formation going southwest. You can see birds and planes below them, they "flew" a little over cloud level. I run inside and got my Sony HD camcorder, but with the small viewfinder in this camcorder I just got a very short glimpse of these objects, at least can be seen in the Sony footage and eleven on the security camera footage. That video is attached with this report.

Some of you will have already read this report from Victor Martinez but for those of you who haven't here is the story. Also there have been rebuttals saying it isn't true. You can decide what you think about it. I find it interesting. - Aileen
This is the true story of the Gate 3 Incident.
DATE: This incident occurred in April 1983.
BACKGROUND: Gate 3 was a designation for an entrance into the Groom Lake Complex. This gate connected the Groom Lake complex with Area51. The gates surrounding the Groom Lake complex was [were] the responsibility of a private security company [Wackenhut Corp]. There was a mixture of private security and military security for the complex.
EVENT: The incident occurred when a "Visitor," [ExtraterrestrialEntity/ETE] being housed at Area 51, S-2 facility escaped. A massive search was started by military and private security forces. The Visitor was on foot and left the underground S-2 facility through an open vault door.
NARRATIVE: Part of the search team was the Director of Security for the Groom Lake complex and an agent from the Air Force Office of Special Investigation [AFOSI], who was the counter intelligence officer for the complex. Both were traveling in a jeep from the back gate of Groom Laketo the gate leading into Area 51, called Gate 3.
As the jeep approached Gate 3, the OSI agent noticed the guard was missing from the required location outside the gate house. As the jeep stopped, the OSI Agent got out of the jeep to investigate.
CRITICAL MASS: The OSI agent walked up to the gate to check on the guard. As the OSI agent got closer to the front door of the gate, the OSI agent noticed the interior of the gate was blood splattered. The OSI agent noticed only small pieces of human body parts were left of a human being. The OSI agent returned to the jeep and contacted the Central Security Control (main/primary security office for the complex) and reported the findings. The Director of Security contacted his office by way of a radio phone, mounted inside the jeep. The OSI agent, armed with only an automatic pistol, walked around the area searching for a perpetrator.
FLASHPOINT: The OSI agent located the "Visitor," lying down near an underground water culvert. The OSI agent challenged the Visitor, ordering the Visitor to give up. The Visitor walked away, followed bythe OSI agent. At some point, the OSI agent fired his weapon at the Visitor, as a warning. The Visitor, turned and pointed something at the OSI agent. The OSI agent fired directly at the Visitor, hitting the Visitor directly in the chest with two (2) rounds from the 45 caliber automatic pistol. The Visitor fell to the ground. It took about 18 minutes for additional security forces to arrive. The Visitor was placed inside a containment chamber and transported back to the S-2 facility. TheVisitor recovered from the wounds.
FOLLOW-UP: The incident was investigated by the FBI and Air Force Offic Special Investigation [AFOSI]. THE INCIDENT REMAINS CLASSIFIED.
IDENTITY OF THE ALIEN: The name of the creature involved in "The Gate 3Incident" was an Archquloid. A-R-C-H-Q-U-L-O-I-D The alien is described as one of the "Big Nosed Grays." It was a 5' 6"tall, gray or tan being with large, black, slanted eyes and a mushroom-like head, with four (4) long fingers. They have yellow eyes with vertical pupils and very large, beaked noses. They are genetically engineered by the Ebens [cloned?] and were given to the U.S. Government for observation/examination/study by the Ebens.
VISITOR HOUSING: This particular Visitor lived in "The Bubble"officially known as "The Clean Sphere" located between Levels 2 and 3 of the 8-level S-2 facility at Area 51. If memory serves me right, there were 12-15 compartments within "The Clean Sphere" or "Bubble" which was located at the south end of the S-2 facility. Both the Archquloid and J-ROD lived in two (2) of the 12-15 compartments marked "Visitor Containment." Victor, it's important to note here that J-ROD and the Archquloid creature were NOT one and the same and that the claims made by some that they were are just plain WRONG. The Archquloid escaped, NOT J-ROD.
What we speculate is that because the Archquloid had to live its primary existence in "The Clean Sphere" and could only spend a minimal amount of time in our atmosphere, that an OVER exposure to our atmosphere somehow affected its sanity and intellect. Furthermore, it caused the creature to become delusional, disoriented and lose its mental faculties for sound reasoning, analysis and judgment. In street parlance, it "lost its mind" or was of unsound mind which accounts for his escape from the high-security "Clean Sphere" facility and the resulting homicide of the security guard.
MODERATOR's NOTE: ONLY the following section was written by a confidential source within the Defense Intelligence Agency and is a current sitting member of "The DIA-6." He appears to have a different take on the cause of the Visitor's aberrant, dysfunctional, frenzied and near hysterical behavior. ANONYMOUS resumes his information under CATALOGUED ALIEN SPECIES.
"VISITOR" SUPPLEMENTARY BACKGROUND INFORMATION: VICTOR: This particular "Visitor" was suffering from a medical[mental/emotional] condition. Consider the following: - this creature came to this planet from another solar system; - traveled about 38 light years [38.42]; - was locked up in a special containment housing complex; - was shocked by our civilization and our culture; - was not allowed to leave; - was under strict compliance controls (metal straps that shocked the creature when it tried to leave or did not comply with our instructions), and; - was unable to communicate in our language. It was probably suffering from PTST [Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome].What a shock! This is the same type of shock felt by our 12 TeamMembers enroute to Planet SERPO in 1965. The creature recovered from its gunshot wounds inflicted by the OSI agent. But it later died, about one year later. By the way, Bob Lazar DID work at Area 51. He is also aware of this incident.

The truth about the British Government's interest in UFOs has been released by The National Archives.
In what I believe to be the most important revelation so far in the British disclosure programme, the MoD's Defence Intelligence Staff admit that "lack of funds and higher priorities" had prevented any detailed study of the thousands of reports they had received since the end of the Second World War.
The frank admission is contained in a formerly secret memo dated July 1995 and written by the UFO desk officer at DI55, the branch of the DIS responsible for the assessment of UFO reports for defence threat. The officer - a RAF Wing Commander - concludes the lid had already been blown on secrecy surrounding defence intelligence interest in UFOs by a series of media revelations. But he said the public perception of DI55 as "defenders of the Earth from the alien menace" was "light years from the truth"....

SHORT UFO FACT: [Shortly after dark on the night of twelfth, the Air Defense Command radar station at Ellsworth AFB, just east of Rapid City, had received a call from the local Ground Observer Corps filter center. A lady spotter at Black Hawk, about 10 miles west of Ellsworth, had reported an extremely bright light low on the horizon, off to the northeast. APRIL 30, 2013 - ARGENTINA - Two agronomists claim having photographed a UFO while conducting a survey of a field near Pampa M'uyoj in Santiago del Estero. Antonio Pappalardo and Roberto Aguila were startled when they returned to the office to look over the photographs that constitute their work, performed in the middle of siesta time.
"We came to do a survey and took a series of photos to convey the visual information and analyze it back at the office. At around three o'clock in the afternoon, without looking through the viewfinder, I took some photos with my (cellphone) camera but without noticing anything strange. I submitted them to my boss, who noticed there was something odd, looking like an unidentified flying object," one of the surveyors told the Diario Panorama newspaper.
The cellphone photo was taken from a moving pickup truck by the driver himself, holding the cellphone over his companion, who happened to be his boss.
Another photo of the landscape was taken once the agronomists descended from their vehicle, although the object appeared in the initial photo, so it can be inferred that it was in motion.
"I wanted to see the job done, and when I noticed the object in the distance looked like an unidentified flying object (UFO), like a flying saucer, I couldn't believe it.
I enlarged it using the computer's zoom function, and noticed that it was a completely solid object," explained the engineer who took the photo.
"Due to the likelihood that it could have been a cloud, for instance, I looked at another photo, taken in a time interval of one minute, and it was no longer there. This showed that it couldn't be a cloud, as it vanished too quickly," he added.
After passing the photo to his superiors, and analyzing that something unusual was in it, the agronomist says that it changed his outlook on the existence of abnormal objects in the sky.
"Up to now, the truth is I'd never believed [in such things], but seeing this photo, it seems that there is something to it. We were very surprised," he concluded.
Following the startling manifestation of an Unidentified Flying Object over Pampa M'uyoj and a new photograph taken by a resident of the Almirante Brown neighborhood, suggesting the possible presence of an unknown object, renowned parapsychologist, ufologist and historian Fabio Zerpa confirmed the theory put forth by other specialists, stating that the object that flew over the skies of Santiago [del Estero] is indeed a UFO.
"What flew over Santiago [del Estero] is in fact a UFO, but it is nothing new in that province, much less in the world. More cases are taking place now and reports on unidentified flying objects are circulated because people have lost the fear of being ridiculed. This makes the witness - the backbone of research - to feel encouraged to speak out and expedite the work to be done," explained Zerpa.
Fabio Zerpa also referred to parts of the world that attract these objects, and our province is one of them.
"There are places with magnetic fields and "force triangles" where these objects are more readily seen. Santiago is among them, particularly the area of Fr'ias, C'ordoba, Catamarca [as well as] in Chile and Spain. But we also realize that UFOs are seen in all regions of the world," he added.
The ufologist also highlighted the fact that technological progress has been a positive influence in capturing these objects.
"Since 1975, when I began researching invisible UFOs, the ones that the human eye is unable to see, but can be picked up by a photo camera with greater viewing capabilities. There are three fundamental points when it comes to capturing a UFO: the witness, the technology, and the changes and transformations of humanity itself, with unidentified flying objects manifesting themselves even more to increase the expectations of a future contact with extraterrestrials."
Finally, he stated that these sightings shall continue occurring more and more as time goes on.
"UFOs shall be seen more frequently, and Santiago [del Estero] is among the chosen sites, as they descend in areas with low population density, and the province has these characteristics," he concluded. - SCOTT CORRALES / INEXPLICATA.

UFO SIGHTING IN PARMA, OHIO ON SEPTEMBER 9TH 2013 - ROUND RED LIGHT WITH SLIGHT WHITE GLOW AROUND OUTSIDE EDGEMy wife and I were taking a walk around our courtyard. I looked up at the stars, as I always do, when I observed red light coming across the sky (direction NE to SW). I, at first, thought it was a helicopter but it made no noise and the light was not flashing. My wife and I stood and watched to see where it was going or what it was going to do when it stopped, just hovered, and then moved back and forth a bit. I couldnt believe it. I looked around for anyone who might be out walking so they could see it as well but no one was around. As we watched, my wife thought the orb was getting smaller but I remarked that no, it was moving straight up and away from us, very fast. SHORT UFO FACT: [One of the most famous incidents occurred on September 17, 1965 in South Africa by police constables John Locken and Koos de Klerk, who were were patrolling on the Pretoria-Bronkhorstspruit road, shortly after midnight - not very far away from the latest sighting in Middelburg last weekend. Please Share, Thumbs Up and Spread the word UFO's are out there. Here is a weird shaped UFO above the Moon. I was looking at Apollo photographs and this object stuck out from above the Moon. It is brighter then the actual moon which suggest it might have light reflecting off of it from the Sun. This is a very strange UFO or anomaly. This is stricly my opinion.
It is evident that the world-famous Roswell UFO Museum has always promoted only the extraterrestrial interpretation of the Roswell incident.
And, unfortunately, it seems to continue to exclude any speakers who differ from their view.
Of course, it can do anything it wants, since it is a private organization.
Fortunately, in recent years, some UFO researchers who bring up alternative explanations and views on the Roswell incident have been coming to the Roswell UFO Festival and have begun to give presentations.
I totally welcome the emergence of those researchers.
Unfortunately, of course, those speakers are not welcome to speak at the UFO Museum.
This is truly a shame.
However, the good news is that the City of Roswell (especially in recent years) has become open to various speakers with various interpretations of the Roswell incident.
However, when the general public hears about the annual Roswell UFO Festival, it seems to assume that the Festival is mainly sponsored by the UFO Museum.
This is far from the truth.
There are several organizations that play a major role in sponsoring the Roswell UFO Festival.
First and foremost is the City of Roswell itself.
Special thanks goes to the tireless effort of people such as Renee Roach, unselfish, hard-working marketing director of the city.
All events sponsored by the City of Roswell are free.
The main venue of the City of Roswell's UFO Festival is at the Roswell Convention and Visitors Center, 912 N. Main St.
Right next to the Center is the Roswell Museum and Art Center.
This is where all lectures and presentations given by many UFO researchers ("including researchers whose views differ from what the Roswell UFO Museum dictates") are free to the public.
Speakers with alternate views of the Roswell incident have been welcome to speak there.
What is truly great about the City of Roswell's part in all of this is, again, that the events sponsored by the city is all free of charge, including the many entertainment events of the Roswell UFO Festival.
On the other hand, all events sponsored by the Roswell UFO Museum are not free.
The City of Roswell, therefore, is in a bind because, on the one hand it benefits from many visitors who visit the Roswell UFO Museum and will spend money in the city.
But, on the other hand, the City of Roswell has a difficult time with the UFO Museum because the UFO Musem's financial impact and influence to the city is big.
In other words, it seems that the Roswell UFO Museum has become too powerful ("and perhaps too dictatorial?)" and has a tendency to dominate and influence the direction of the Roswell Festival.
Personally I like Free Events.
This is why I will continue to support the City of Roswell, especially the work of Renee Roach who has done so much to promote the Festival.
Yes, I will definitely continue to support the City of Roswell's role in the UFO Festival, and not the Roswell UFO Museum.
