As SCIENCE FICTION, this was a winner. It increased the circulation of Amazing Stories 50,000 over night, and held it there for 4 years. But few people realized that very early in this "mystery," a number of things occurred which convinced the editor of Amazing Stories (your present editor - Ray Palmer) that there was something besides fiction in the manuscripts and letters written by this Pennsylvania welder who heard voices. One of those things, to stay strictly on our present subject, was flying saucers. If Shaver was telling the truth, obviously flying saucers would have to be observed by somebody, sooner or later. So we carefully documented things for ourselves by publishing everything about them, and making a sort of "prediction" that they would appear. When Kenneth Arnold reported them, it was like having the papal "imprimature" stamped on our magazine.Approximately a month later, the first important thing happened. A man named Crisman reported that flying saucers had actually appeared over Maury Island, near Tacoma, Washington, and that there were, on the beach, tons of fragments from one of them which had been in trouble. He even sent a cigar-box full of the fragments. An analysis of the fragments brought out one fact that your editor was not about to ignore - the element calcium which would not burn off at high temperatures, present in what otherwise seemed to be ordinary slag. So, we wondered who to send to investigate whom we could be reasonably sure would know what he was looking for; that man was Kenneth Arnold.We wrote him and asked him if he would go to Maury Island and check Crisman's story. He wired us and said if we would send him 500 he would fly up there. We sent him the 500. As Ken put it later (and this was our first contact with him, notwithstanding Air Force hints to the contrary), since we had been the only ones to put our money where our mouth was, he agreed to give his story to us, and not to all the other publishers who were trying to get it from him.In Ken's book "The Coming of the Saucers," which we have just reprinted in paper-back form, he describes the incredible adventure that happened to him and to Captain Smith of United Airlines. It was on August 1, 1947 that Arnold, Crisman, Dahl, Smith called your editor in the middle of the night to say they were pulling out, because they were frightened, and had called in Military Intelligence (Davidson and Brown). When Ken told your editor that these two men had loaded the fragments in their B-25 Bomber to fly them back to Hamilton Air force Base for examination, a few things clicked into place in our mind. We found we were too late to prevent Brown and Davidson from taking off, but we did insist that Ken leave his plane in Tacoma, and take the train back. He wanted to know why, and we said it was too dangerous. He laughed at us. But two hours later, he called again to tell us that Davidson and Bron were dead. He wasn't laughing this time.But Ken is no chicken. He did fly back home. But he didn't make it, just as we predicted. He has never forgotten the take-off crash, and how it happened.It is this factor of pre-knowledge that at first got people to believing that the UFO must be a Palmer fake. But when the pre-knowledge began to include such things as death for two men, a crashed plane that could not have been an accident, and a nineteen-year prediction that nobody would ever catch a flying saucer, or be able to back up a sighting with proof, and that no existing military aircraft or weapon could ever catch one or shoot one down, then it becomes more than a "fake" - it becomes something so "far out" that there is only one recourse; bury the whole thing under the rug. It is a peculiarity of the 'authority', when he can't explain a thing, he denies that it exists.That is the official position today. Their account lets this editor know that Davidson and Brown had plenty of time to save themselves, but they did not. This also confused the Sheriff at Kelso, Washington, who watched the crash. We suppose he is still wondering why Davidson and Brown didn't jump, because he knows they had timeKen Arnold wonders how your editor was able to predict that the fragments that Arnold himself could testify were placed in the plane, were not found in the wreck, and he knew too that they were searched for in the most intense sifting of an area ever carried out by a search team.It was very important to somebody that those fragments never get to Hamilton Air Force Base, whose men had no business in this affair in the first place, and were in it only because of Ken Arnold's unpredtable decision to call them in.Your editor can't prove a thing. But he agrees with Ruppelt - this was one of the cruelest hoaxes of all time. It was designed to "kill" the flying saucers invented by Ray Palmer for all time. There never were five "saucers" over Maury Island. They did not leave tons of fragments on the beach. No harbor patrol boat was damaged by those falling fragments. No dog was killed aboard that patrol boat. No person suffered an arm injury from the fragments (from something else, yes) that necessitated hospital treatment. In short, the Maury Island incident was not an incident at all. The fragments later produced DID come from the slag piles of the Tacoma smelter!It may seem strange to hear Ray Palmer say that one of the most famous of all saucer sightings never occurred. Michaud uses a literature review format to cover broad topics covering the spectrum of extraterrestrial considerations. He is one of few authors to attempt an in-depth examination of the impact of extraterrestrial contact on human civilization. While speculation about what aliens might be like can run wild, the question of human impact has more of a focus. We can look to the history of human civilization to try and decide what might happen after First Contact.

Michaud enjoys challenging assumptions.The optimists see aliens providing us with incredible information about science, philosophy and religion. This, they hope, will bring humanity together and allow us to attain a new level of cooperation. This thinking seems to ignore the realities around us. There seems to be a na"ive aspect to information transfer among the First Contact optimists, which Michaud does a good job of challenging in the book. High information contact means that we are given vast reserves of extraterrestrial information about intergalactic history, science, engineering, and technology. The optimists see this as beneficial and the primary factor leading us to a new golden age. Michaud sites several authors who question this result. To me, it's akin to being the kid of a rich celebrity. You have all the money and fame you want, without working for it, without earning it. You never build a craft or acquire new skills, because it's not necessary. Take a look at the National Enquirer to see what happens to those kids. What will happen to our society if we are spoon fed knowledge?

Probably the most disturbing concept at the optimist pole is the idea of utopia. Why would we expect a future for humanity that bears no resemblance to any point in our history? If life is a struggle and has always been a struggle why would we assume that First Contact would change that fact? Why would we assume that extraterrestrials don't have their own set of very real challenges and weaknesses? It would seem that understanding those weaknesses may be one of the most important things for us to figure out. If we assume that they are infallible, we might not realize potential dangers in the relationship.

Those on the negative pole usually worry most about aggressive extraterrestrials. Michaud explores the areas around this extreme. He cites Donald Tarter in proposing that cultural, theological and philosophical knowledge could destroy our allegiance to human institutions. Are we really that weak in our culture? Would our religions be that stressed by First Contact? The Roman Catholic Church has already made moves to embrace the idea of plurality in the universe. They recently held a conference exploring the possibilities of extraterrestrial life. Couldn't other world religions quickly follow suit? Is it so hard to conceive of a god that can create not only humans, but also extraterrestrials? Christians manage to reinterpret the Bible on a regular basis. Would it be so tough to encompass First Contact?

The Most Haunted House In England Borley Rectory

THE MOST HAUNTED HOUSE IN ENGLAND - BORLEY RECTORY

PART ONE

(Built in (1862-1863) - burned down in 1939 - demolished in 1944)

'What would be the use of an old lady like me, waiting to meet her maker, telling a whole lot of fairy stories?'

The simple, clear and convincing words of Ethel Bull at 93 years of age, when questioned about her previous home being the most haunted house in England...Borley Rectory...

In 1892 Ethel's father, the Reverend Henry Dawson Ellis Bull died, leaving his son, Reverend Harry Bull in the care of the family and to deal with the paranormal phenomena which would soon manifest itself in greater proportions.

THE FIRST MAJOR SIGHTING AT BORLEY RECTORY - THE MOST HAUNTED HOUSE IN ENGLAND - LOCATED NR SUDBURY ON THE SUFFOLK-ESSEX BORDER - BUILT BY REVEREND HENRY DAWSON ELLIS BULL:

On a late afternoon (July 28th 1900), Ethel Bull and two of her sisters, having just spent part of the day at a party, strolled idly through the grounds of their home. In the distance (about 40 yards away), they all became aware of what seemed to be a nun materializing before their eyes. The girls recoiled as they watched the ghostly apparition of the nun move in an eerie gliding motion by the stream.

Another sister who was watching her sister's strange behaviour from the rectory hurriedly joined them. On noticing the phantom, she seemed unfazed - bravely approaching it, but then paused in her stride as the misty spectre faded into nothingness.

Some say the apparitions are linked to a murky and sad tale. It was thought that the rectory was built on the site of a thirteenth century monastery and was interconnected to a nearby convent in Bures. Legend has it that a nun had fallen in love with a monk, but they had both been killed before eloping.

This story does tie in with the unearthing of part of the walls of an earlier building dating to the time of the monastery.

Although later accounts add more confusion, as they state that the discovery of another house once standing on the site of Borley Rectory was revealed along with a female skull and jawbone. It is believed the skull belonged to a nun of French origin named, Marie Lairre, who had eloped to England with her lover, only to have been betrayed by him and murdered. He had then buried her in the cellar of the house.

Further sightings of the nun were reported on many occasions. One of those times began as the night was breaking when Ethel and the family cook were chatting outside. All of a sudden, the apparition of the nun appeared leaning on the gate before fading and disappearing.

Ethel also described a particularly terrifying experience which took place in her bedroom. This time she awoke to find an elongated man in a tall hat looming down on her as he stood over her bed. As soon as Ethel reacted to the spirit, it disappeared.

The Bull's paranormal experiences came to an end when Harry Bull died on June 9th 1927, leaving Borley Rectory vacant for over a year.

On October 2nd 1928, the Reverend Guy Eric Smith moved into the rectory with his wife. After experiencing a considerable amount of paranormal phenomena, including servant bells ringing by themselves, the Smith's contacted the Daily Mirror newspaper and asked if they could be put in touch with the Society for Psychical Research.

On June 10th 1929 the Daily Mirror sent a reporter to interview the Smith's and on June 12th 1929, Harry Price was asked by the Mirror to investigate Borley Rectory. Price visited the Rectory and was impressed and convinced by the paranormal events at the rectory (most he associated with poltergeist activity).

Borley Rectory would remain an obsession in Price's life...believing he thought - a genuine haunting.

Harry Price died in 1948 at the age of 67 years, but not before conducting further experiments into the most haunted house in England.
