"Mars, therefore, is not only uninhabited by intelligent beings such as Mr. Lowell postulates, but is absolutely UNINHABITABLE."
Remember that Wallace has been derided for his beliefs in ID and spiritualism. Yet he was obviously not afraid to go against the scientific speculative spirit of the age. Indeed. In the introduction to the 1907 edition, "the whole of which is scanned online", editor Charles H. Smith notes,
For many years one of Wallace's least remembered books, Is Mars Habitable? is increasingly being recognized as one of the first examples of the proper application of the scientific method to the study of extraterrestrial atmospheres and geography-that is, as one of the pioneer works in the field of exobiology. Here is Wallace's conclusion:
To put the whole case in the fewest possible words:
(1) All physicists are agreed that, owing to the distance of Mars from the sun, it would have a mean temperature of about -35 F. (= 456 F. abs.) even if it had an atmosphere as dense as ours.
(2) But the very low temperatures on the earth under the equator, at a height where the barometer stands at about three times as high as on Mars, proves, that from scantiness of atmosphere alone Mars cannot possibly have a temperature as high [[p. 110]] as the freezing point of water; and this proof is supported by Langley's determination of the low maximum temperature of the full moon.
The combination of these two results must bring down the temperature of Mars to a degree wholly incompatible with the existence of animal life.
(3) The quite independent proof that water-vapour cannot exist on Mars, and that therefore, the first essential of organic life--water--is non-existent.
The conclusion from these three independent proofs, which enforce each other in the multiple ratio of their respective weights, is therefore irresistible--that animal life, especially in its higher forms, cannot exist on the planet.

What made Wallace so unpopular compared to Darwin is that he insisted that in science, evidence matters. Carl Sagan-style proclamations like "They're out there! How could we be so arrogant as to think we are all alone!" do not become science just because they are proclaimed by scientists.

Loads of the super-hard precious stones may be floating among the gas giants' fluid layers and melted into liquid further into their depths, say a pair of planetary scientists.The research, being presented at the Division for Planetary Sciences conference this week in Denver, sprang from very humble beginnings - soot in Saturn's atmosphere, said Kevin Baines, a planetary scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and one of the work's coauthors.Baines, who works on the Cassini mission's Saturn-orbiting spacecraft, was studying thick yellowish ammonia clouds in Saturn's atmosphere when he noticed other extremely dark clouds cropping up as well."It's almost like clockwork in the southern hemisphere, where we were studying these thunderstorms," Baines said. "Whenever you have a thunderstorm you get both these types of clouds."The dark stuff turned out to be soot, bits of pure carbon with no internal structure trapped in frozen ammonia, Baines said. But where was this soot coming from? He and planetary scientist Mona Delitsky of California Specialty Engineering in Pasadena came up with an idea.Saturn's atmosphere is mostly hydrogen, Baines said, but there's about a half percent of methane, a molecule made up of carbon and hydrogen. During a thunderstorm, lightning can fry that methane to a crisp, releasing the hydrogen and reducing the carbon to little black bits. The researchers think those bits of soot are blown up into the ammonia clouds during the thunderstorms."So we have this reservoir of carbon dust and so the natural question is, what happens to the carbon dust eventually?" Baines said. "Eventually it's going to drift on down."The researchers think that as the soot particles fall slowly through Saturn, they start to find one another and glom together. These bits of pure carbon may also act as seeds that pull the carbons out of the methane molecules they meet, growing over time.By the time they've floated several hundred miles into the planet, the growing heat and pressure crush the carbon into graphite, where the atoms are arranged into two-dimensional structures layered on top of one another. While it has some crystalline order, graphite's still pretty soft. Those two-dimensional layers rub off easily, which is why it's so useful as pencil lead.Then about 3,700 miles down into the atmosphere, roughly the distance from Earth's surface to its core, the pressure rises to 100,000 times that of Earth at sea level. It's so powerful that it crushes the graphite into carbon's three-dimensional crystalline form, diamond. These diamonds grow into large pebbles as they bob around in the planet's fluid layers, Baines said.The diamonds precipitate down through Saturn's layers for another 22,400 miles or so, Baines said. (Keep in mind, Earth's diameter is a mere 7,918 miles.) But at that point, the temperature is so high that even the diamonds can't take it anymore, and they melt.This entire process probably takes a long time, Baines estimated, perhaps on the order of a thousand years.What would a melted diamond look like? It's unclear, given that diamonds are defined by their crystalline structure, Delitsky said, though scientists have some ideas."When diamond melts, the liquid kind of retains some diamond-like geometry," she said.The idea that diamonds may reside in the bowels of other planets is not a new one, Baines said. The ice giants Neptune and Uranus have high enough pressures near their cores to forge the precious stone, but not enough heat to melt it.But Saturn - and Jupiter, which is even more massive than its ringed neighbor - may showcase a novel way that a planet could potentially be making the diamonds, he added.As for whether Earthlings could one day go and mine the diamonds, sending sturdy robots to scoop the gems out of Jupiter and Saturn's layers, it's somewhere in the realm of possibility, Baines said, maybe in 500 years' time. WHAT IS THAT?: CALLERS, AIR10 SPOT UFO OVER SACRAMENTO

SACRAMENTO, CA - News10 often receives calls from those who spotted something unusual in the night skies. It's not nearly as common for those calls to be backed up by our own Air10.
While shooting Friday Night Football highlights over Sacramento, Air10 pilot Ed Georges and FNF correspondent Angel Cardenas spotted a strange set of lights flying over their helicopter.
"I know what aircraft lighting looks like and this was definitely something different," Georges said. "It looked almost like a scrolling message on a blimp to the naked eye. I was at 1,200 feet and it was considerably higher."
Georges said he and Cardenas manuevered the helicopter to get a better look at the lights through Air10's Power Zoom camera.
"(Angel and I) were both amazed at the odd lights and movement. I started flying toward it, but it began to fade away and disappeared to the southeast," Georges said. "Not knowing the size of the object, I couldn't determine how far away we were, but I believe it was some distance away as the image was fuzzy even through the PowerZoom camera."
Not long after their sighting, several callers phoned the News10 newsroom to report seeing the same phenomenon.
When contacted, Federal Aviation Adminstration and Sacramento International Airport spokespeople said they hadn't heard anything about the object and had no idea what the craft could be. A Travis Air Force Base representative said the base had no aircrafts that could be confused with a UFO.

I was returning home from playing adult hockey driving south on Route 44 (Mantua) in Portage County ( I had nothing to drink)and was getting ready to make a left hand turn to head down my road when I looked up to see the moon and immediately noticed 4 orange lights just below the moon. The light in front was lower than the second, the third was in same position as the first and the last light in same position as second. A kind low, high, low,high deal if that makes any sense. I had no idea what I was looking at so I made the turn onto my road and immediately pulled over and grabbed my cell phone in hopes of taking a photo. The view in My camera was so poor I ended up not taking a photo because it didn't show anything I was actually seeing. I was standing outside of my vehicle for 2 -3 minutes just watching these lights move in a straight line to the southeast. I watched until some cloud cover moved in and began to cover up the lights. I then jumped back into my truck and headed down my road...which was the direction the lights were generally moving. I drove down my road which is down hill and has the Cuyahoga River running in the back yard. She was pointing to a picture of one of the soldiers assigned to the base in 1947.I listened to her for a moment and then stood up to learn who she was and what she had been told.Her name was Carlene Green (seen here pointing to her father's picture) who was the daughter of Sergeant Homer G. Rowlette, a member of the 603rd Air Engineering Squadron. And as established by the Yearbook produced by Walter Haut in 1947, he was clearly in Roswell at the right time.According to what she said, she learned of her father's part in the crash retrieval just days before he died. He was on a Gurney and about to be wheeled into an operating room when he asked her to come closer so that he could speak to her.He told her that he had been at the base when the "spaceship" crashed and that he had seen it. He said that the craft was rounded and that he had seen three "little people," and suggested that one of them had survived the crash.He apologized for not telling her sooner but that he had told her brother the story sometime earlier. (The Yearbook picture of Sergeant Rowlette seen here).Finally he cautioned her to keep it all to herself, or else.This all happened in 1988, which is, of course, ten years after Jesse Marcel, Sr. told his story and eight years after the publication of The Roswell Incident.While the story of the Roswell crash wasn't as well known then as it is today, there were television shows that touched on it, there were documentaries about it and some magazine articles that told of it. In other words, this information didn't appear in the vacuum that existed prior to 1980.And yes, this is another second-hand story. It would have been nice to find it prior to Rowlette's death in 1988 but that didn't happen. We are left with these tales and we each must decide how important they are to the overall case. EL milagro que se describe, conocido mundialmente como la >, comentan en tono de burla. Y probablemente no vayan mal encaminados.
En 1949, la ni~na Catarina Richero, de Balestrino, Italia, vio mientras jugaba un c'irculo luminoso que surgi'o de las alturas, en cuyo interior hab'ia un Angel con los cabellos rubios. En la primera aparici'on que tuvieron los j'ovenes videntes de Medjugorje (antigua Yugoslavia) durante 1981, presenciaron la silueta amorfa de una joven de color gris, volando a treinta cent'imetros del suelo. En los meses siguientes, otros fen'omenos har'an acto de presencia: Una en Agosto del mismo a~no y, al mes siguiente, varios testigos presencian un cono de luz en forma de embudo que iluminaba la colina de las apariciones. Dentro del foco observaron a la Virgen con los brazos abiertos, y desplaz'andose en direcci'on a la Iglesia Parroquial.
Algunos testimonios sobre las apariciones de El Escorial (Madrid-Espa~na) describen a un objeto circular que se mov'ia alrededor de otro objeto luminoso interpretado, en un primer momento, como el disco solar. Seg'un relata Salvador Freixedo, Amparo Cuevas tiene muchas cosas que decir sobre naves espaciales, objetos y luces que havisto en el cielo, y de otros personajes que no son precisamente la Virgen, ni parecen estar relacionados con ella; pero le han aconsejado que obre con prudencia y no hable sobre el particular.
Gilbert Cornu, reputado uf'ologo franc'es, descubri'o que desde 1947, a~no en que surgi'o la moda de los de Kenneth Arnold, el n'umero de informes sobre apariciones Marianas creci'o espectacularmente: Cova da Cruz (Portugal), Tyromestica (Checoslovaquia), Heroldsbach (Alemania), Acquaviva (Sicilia), Cuevas de Vinrom'a (Espa~na), Isla Bourchard, etc'etera. Sucedi'o lo mismo en Francia, durante la oleada OVNI que sufri'o en 1954, y en 1970 se registraron, repartidas por todo el mundo, una decena de apariciones. Aqu'i, en la tierra de , como la de fine el investigador Ramos Perera, sufrimos en el bienio 1986-88 nuestra oleada Mariana coincidiendo, una vez m'as, con espectaculares avistamientos OVNI: Benalup (C'adiz), Alcira y Fenollet (Valencia), El Repilado (Huelva), Cospeito (Lugo), Denia (Alicante), Pedrera (Sevilla), La Caleta (M'alaga), Espinosillo (Toledo), etc'etera. Las razones de estas correlaciones son muy significativas, aunque s'olo indiquen que la predominancia de un tipo de fen'omeno an'omalo pueda provocar un resurgimiento de la ocurrencia de otro fen'omeno. Es el llamado.
Pronto se descubrieron otras oleadas Marianas anteriores al inicio de la Ufolog'ia moderna, como es el caso poco conocido de Lourdes, a finales del siglo XIX, en cuya regi'on se produjeron otras apariciones de menor fama que las protagonizadas por Bernadette Soubirous. O B'elgica en 1933, en cuyo escueto marco geogr'afico se produjeron las apariciones de Beauraing, Okerzele, Banneux, Houlteau, Chaineux y Melen.
Paul Thomas, en su Iibro "Flying Saucers Trough The Ages" (Los Platillos Volantes a trav'es del t'iempo), incluye una detallada comparaci'on entre observaciones OVNI y los fen'omenos a'ereos producidos durante las apariciones. El autor plantea que una parte de la actividad de los Ovnis es de la misma naturaleza y, por tanto, deriva de la misma fuente que las luces vistas por miles de testigos en contextos marcadamente religiosos.
VISITAS EN PERSONA
S'i, es cierto que la gran mayor'ia de manifestaciones Marianas que proliferan en los 'ultimos a~nos son de naturaleza ps'iquica: 'unicamente los videntes pueden ver, escuchar e interactuar con la entidad aparecida. Pero es que ah'i reside, precisamente, la ambig"uedad que las caracteriza, puesto que la aparici'on se adapta a los videntes, al tiempo que los videntes reciben la aparici'on, a su medida. Sin embargo, ?qu'e hay de esos casos en que la aparici'on puede actuar f'isicamente sobre el mundo real? En tales situaciones las figuras son entes objetivos, es decir, ocupan un espacio f'isico como objetos tridimensionales. Esta categor'ia de manifestaciones, muy semejantes a encuentros cercanos con humanoides, carecen de mensajes, son luminosas, de rasgos difusos y su interpretaci'on depender'a del lugar en que ocurran los encuentros o del contexto sociocultural de los testigos.
Zeitoun y Shoubra, dos suburbios de El Cairo (Egipto), fueron lugar com'un de apariciones en 1968 y 1983, respectivamente. Ambas fueron reconocidas oficialmente por Shenouda III, Jefe de la Iglesia Copta, separada de Roma pero en dialogo positivo con la Iglesia Cat'olica. Dos particularidades comunes en estas manifestaciones: que fueron vistas por todos los asistentes -incluidos los musulmanes- y que han podido ser fotografiadas ampliamente. Los testimonios nos hablan de una figura blanca, luminosa y amorfa, situada en lo alto de la Iglesia de Santa Mar'ia, en el caso de Zeitoun; o Santa Damiana, a~nos despu'es en Shoubra. Junto a la aparici'on, mostrada generalmente en el aire, revoloteaban peque~nas bolas de luz e incluso, a veces, eran el 'unico signo visible en la c'upula del templo. En Ufolog'ia se cree que estas bolas luminosas de comportamiento racional, denominadas , tienen como objetivo vigilar la zona o lugar donde aparecer'a o bien u n OVNI de proporciones generosas, o donde se producir'a un encuentro cercanos con humanoides.
En Banneux, una de tantas apariciones habidas en la oleada belga de 1933, la descripci'on de la llegada de la Virgen a la ni~na Mariette Beco, se asemeja a muchas experiencias religiosas anteriores y a varios casos de Ovnis posteriores: la figura dio la impresi'on de bajar flotando, al principio parec'ia peque~na, pero fue aumentando de tama~no al bajar entre las copas de los pinos, hasta situarse a metro y medio de donde estaba arrodillada Mariette. Llevaba un halo luminoso de rayos de luz que sal'ian claramente de una forma de disco, situado unos metros m'as arriba, en el cielo.
En 1985, doce ni~nos que se encontraban jugando en la plaza del peque~no pueblo de Oliveto Citra, Italia, observaron en el cielo una estela luminosa en direcci'on al castillo. Ellos, en primer lugar, imaginan que son marcianos y les gritan, pero al acercarse ven a una bella se~nora que les sonr'ie. Pronto, el rumor de las apariciones se propaga por la localidad, concentr'andose el 20 de Julio un gent'io de m'as de dos mil peregrinos, que contemplan las evoluciones de una nube luminosa de color rojo, vista, incluso, desde una distancia de diez kil'ometros. Un siglo antes, en otra aldea italiana, cerca de quinientas personas observaron una figura erguida (asociada posteriormente con la Virgen) en la falda de una colina, poco despu'es que un extra~no foco de luz iluminase el lugar.
Tambi'en, puede darse el caso que, unas apariciones de origen ps'iquico, deriven o se asocien con fen'omenos luminosos de consistencia f'isica. Es la situaci'on de finca Betania, municipio de Cua, Venezuela, cuya propietaria, Mar'ia Esperanza Medrano, recibe mensajes de la Virgen desde hace siete a~nos. Y en donde un 25 de Marzo de 1984, la gente del pueblo pudo observar, encima de la cascada que hay detr'as de la iglesia, una figura radiante de luz y otros fen'omenos a'ereos luminosos. Son personas que ven sin 'extasis de ning'un tipo, sin desconectarse del mundo exterior. Ante tal evidencia y despu'es de numerosos interrogatorios, el obispo Monse~nor P'io Bello Ricardo declar'o que a su juicio, las dichas apariciones eran aut'enticas y tienen un car'acter sobrenatural. Aprobando el obispado que el lugar donde se han producido sea considerado sagrado y su culto permitido. Como afirma el sacerdote y experto franc'es Ren'e Laurentin, este reconocimiento oficial sea una novedad, puesto que ninguna aparici'on se hab'ia beneficiado de una autentificaci'on tal desde hace m'as de medio siglo.
VIDENTES Y CONTACTADOS
Seg'un los postulados del investigador Aim'e Michel, es corriente advertir c'omo determinadas experiencias m'isticas o paranormales se dan entre individuos que por razones de salud, taras gen'eticas hereditarias o trastornos de la propia edad conflictiva en que se encuentran, sufren alg'un tipo de disminuci'on ps'iquica, f'isica o mental. Los investigadores del fen'omeno OVNI y los especialistas en apariciones Marianas se han preguntando porqu'e puede elegirse como receptores de tales contactos, advertencias, profec'ias y mensajes a individuos que por su edad o por sus circunstancias psicof'isicas eran los menos apropiados para hacerlos llegar convincentemente a su destino. Los presuntos videntes y contactados tendr'ian que ser las personas menos id'oneas para ser portadoras de tan apocal'ipticos mensajes, que reinciden com'unmente en los peligros a los que se ve abocada nuestra civilizaci'on y supervivencia.
Cuando tras el boom, de los mensajes, visitas y contactos viene la calma y el olvido, los pueden optar por dos caminos: dejarse llevar por los signos del cielo, polariz'andose demasiado f'acilmente en lo extraordinario, aumentando en ocasiones su importancia o acogi'endolos sin suficiente control. Cayendo, en el mejor de los casos, en la superstici'on, el particularismo o el iluminismo. O bien, comienzan a dudar de todo. Se convencen de que las cosas no eran como ellos pensaban, y quiz'a de que han llegado a ser enga~nados. Pueden entonces sufrir un estado depresivo emocional rayando en la desesperaci'on, que, en lamentables ocasiones, se ha cobrado m'as de una vida.
Aunque al principio, el estudio de los sucesos OVNI puede parecer muy alejado de los temas religiosos, en realidad comparte con 'estos muchas similitudes. Y ello es quiz'a m'as verdad hoy en d'ia que hace treinta a~nos, cuando la investigaci'on sobre los Ovnis estaba en pa~nales y los estudiosos daban por garantizado que los Ovnis eran naves extraterrestres de tuercas y tornillos. Sin embargo, muchos uf'ologos han abandonado esa teor'ia por diversas razones: una se refiere a la cantidad de sucesos registrados en este escaso medio siglo. Y, por otro lado, a que los Ovnis -igual que sucede en las apariciones Marianas- han cambiado de forma y aspecto con el transcurso de los a~nos, como si se adecuaran a la tecnolog'ia y creencias de cada cultura en la que se manifiestan.
John A. Keel, Jacques Vall'ee y Jerome Clark vieron una repetici'on coherente de determinados aspectos de los acontecimientos y experiencias considerados an'omalos, habidos en la historia de las apariciones Marianas, normalmente bolas o masas de luz que acompa~naban a las mismas. Postularon un fen'omeno original recurrente, que era interpretado de modo diferente de acuerdo con la experiencia, expectativas, estado mental y psicol'ogico de los testigos. Si los videntes y contactados segu'ian teniendo encuentros cercanos con No Humanos por un per'iodo de centenares de a~nos, ?habr'iamos de considerar que todos los testigos fueron enga~nados? o ?que hay una gran variedad de entidades No Humanas esperando un encuentro? ?No ser'ia m'as razonable suponer que los No Humanos proceden del mismo origen y, simplemente, les parecen diferentes a observadores de distintos contextos?

I tried to convince myself that it was a dream, but to this day I still can't forget it. It was early in the morning around midnight. I don't remember the exact month, but it seems like November or December in 1998. I was headed from Dayton, Texas to Conroe, Texas. I can't even remember if I was on Highway 105 or Highway 1485. I have a hard time remembering exact details and I know that is what you need. I was driving an 18 wheeler for Schneider Trucking. I stopped and got a 6 pack of beer to drink before they stopped selling it at midnight. Anyway there were no vehicles on the road at that time when I saw this bright light in the middle of the road. It stopped me from going any further. I got out to get a closer look, but it was too hot to get close. There was a car that had came from the opposite direction and barely got by before the UFO landed. It was almost like it was after them (two middle aged women stepped out the one told me that they had a similar encounter and that they got sick real bad and one had gotten cancer and believed that it was from their first sighting). None of us were able to look at it. It was so bright anyway. It just took off and left a burnt circle in the middle of the road. I don't know if the women reported it, but I hope that they did. I didn't stick around because I didn't want to lose my commercial driver's license due to the beer. I drove straight over where it landed and kept going and never said anything until today. I know about the Landrum case, but I don't know if it was them or not because I think Betty died in 1998 and they would have reported it if it was them. I was hoping that whoever these women were in November of 1998 would have reported it so I didn't think I imagined this encounter, but I know it had to happen my face and chest are permanently red from it since then. WITNESS ELABORATES ON PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF ENCOUNTER: I sent a picture of myself. I went to a dermatologist about my redness. It is just my face neck and only the part of my chest that was exposed from my shirt. Anyway I never had it before and hasn't gone away. I have no history of rosacea or anything like it. Doctors don't know what it is and the only thing I can think of is that bright light that night. I never experienced anything like it before or since and I guess if those women or anyone didn't report it, then it must be in my mind and I can live with it. I wasn't after attention or exposure. I just needed to know that someone else had seen it I won't waste any more of your time. Was there a relationship between the cases despite the fact that they were 18 years apart? What about the 2 women who allegedly had a prior encounter that may have caused cancer? The light was very bright, hot and left a burned spot on the highway. The witness's photo shows the redness from the burns.
